The Bali starling is down to a few hundred birds in the wild, and West Bali National Park is the only place it has never disappeared from. It is a startling thing to see: chalk white, with a blue mask and a crest that lifts when it calls.
Mornings are when the park moves, which is why this starts before it is properly light. The walk is flat, unhurried, and about four kilometres through savanna and dry monsoon forest. Beyond the starling there are macaques, barking deer, and around ninety other bird species on the park’s list.

08:30 — Breakfast in the field
