Pemuteran is a working village on the north-west coast, set between dry hills and a sheltered bay. It has the widest choice of beach and dive resorts in the region and is the usual base for Menjangan Island: the boats leave from Banyuwedang, 15 minutes west by road, and some hotels run fast boats directly from the beach.
The bay has a reef of its own close to the shore, including the Biorock project, where coral grows on steel structures laid on the seabed. Snorkelling, guided dives and PADI courses run from the beach, and dolphins are often seen offshore at sunrise.
On land, the coast is lined with temples: Pulaki, known for the macaques that live around it, Melanting, Belatung and Pabean. A hatchery near the village releases turtle hatchlings between April and October. Sumberkima, the next bay to the west, adds hill walks, kayaking and a reef restoration site.

April to November is the dry season and the most settled time of year. The reefs are sheltered enough to snorkel and dive year round; January and February bring the heaviest rain.
Most trips to Menjangan Island leave in the morning and return by early afternoon, which leaves the rest of the day for the bay, the temples or the hills.
A sarong is required at every temple. Turtle releases depend on when the eggs hatch, between April and October.
Pemuteran Beach runs along a sheltered bay, with the beach resorts set directly behind it. The reef begins close to the shore, so snorkelling starts from the beach or a short boat ride out, and the Biorock reef restoration project lies in the bay.
Dolphin boats leave the beach at 06:00, and in the evening there are sunset boat cruises and a barbecue on the sand.
The boats to the island leave from Banyuwedang, 15 minutes west of Pemuteran by road, and some Pemuteran hotels run fast boats directly from the beach. Most trips leave in the morning and return by early afternoon.
Yes. Pemuteran's reefs lie close to the shore, which makes them easy to reach and suitable for every level of swimmer. They include the Biorock reef, where coral grows on steel structures laid on the seabed as part of a restoration project.
The hatchery looks after nests until the eggs hatch, between April and October. Once the hatchlings emerge there is a window of about twelve hours in which to release them, so a release cannot be booked for a fixed date.
Two nights covers Menjangan Island and West Bali National Park comfortably. Three lets you add the bay reef at Pemuteran or a morning at Lovina.
