Pemuteran bay holds the biggest Biorock installation anywhere: steel frames carrying a low electrical current, on which coral grows several times faster than it otherwise would. It began after blast fishing and bleaching flattened the reef in the late nineties, and it has brought it back.
The snorkelling is shallow and close to shore, so it suits everyone. Afterwards the walk goes up through the fishing village to Pura Pulaki, the temple on the headland, which has a resident troop of macaques entirely unbothered by visitors.
Itinerary

A briefing at the project hut from one of the team.
09:30 — The Biorock frames
Three to seven metres down, close in, and thick with new growth.
11:00 — Through the village
Up past the boats and the drying racks.
12:00 — Pura Pulaki
The headland temple, the view back over the bay, and the macaques.
