Ijen is a volcano in East Java with a turquoise acid lake in its crater, a kilometre wide, and an active sulphur mine still worked by hand. Before dawn, gas escaping from the vents burns with a blue flame, visible only in the dark.
The trip leaves your hotel at 23:00 for the blue fire, or 03:00 for sunrise at the rim, and crosses to Java on the short ferry from Gilimanuk. From the Paltuding trailhead the path to the rim is about three kilometres, the last half steep. After the crater lake at sunrise you come down, stop for lunch and take the ferry back. Transport, the ferry, a guide, entrance fees and lunch are included.

Things to know
- Leaves at 23:00 for the blue fire, or 03:00 for sunrise only.
- A health certificate is required to climb; it can be arranged for a small fee.
- You need reasonable fitness: the trail to the rim is about three kilometres, the last part steep.
- Bring trekking shoes and warm clothes.
- The blue fire depends on weather and volcanic activity and cannot be guaranteed.
- Not advised in the rainy season.
