Menjangan Island is one of the best places in Bali to try scuba diving for the first time. The water on the sheltered side of the island is calm, the first dives stay between three and five metres, and visibility regularly reaches thirty metres.
The day starts with a briefing and instruction in the basic skills: breathing from the regulator, clearing your mask and controlling your buoyancy. You then make two dives on the reef with a PADI professional beside you, never more than two guests to one instructor. The boat leaves Banyuwedang at around nine and you are back at your hotel by early afternoon.

Things to know
- No certification needed.
- Maximum two guests per instructor.
- All divers complete a medical checklist. Asthma, heart conditions, diabetes or pregnancy need a recent doctor's letter.
- Leave 12 hours after a single dive, and 18 hours after repeat or multi-day diving, before flying.
