Spinner dolphins feed off Lovina at first light, and the boats go out to meet them. It is an early start, the sea is usually glassy, and the sun comes up behind the mountains rather than out of the water, which gives the whole thing a soft grey-gold light.
The boat is yours rather than part of a convoy, and the skippers we book with hold their distance from the pods. It makes for a better morning, and it is easier on the animals.
Itinerary
05:00 — Lovina beach
Push out while it is still dark.
05:45 — Open water
The pods usually surface a kilometre or two out.
07:00 — Sunrise
Coffee on the water as the light comes over the ridge.
08:00 — Back on the sand
In time for a proper breakfast.
